I am a bit hard of hearing, so when I watch a TV show or a movie, I like to get subtitles for it. If I don’t hear something, I don’t have to rewind – I just glance at the subtitles. If I want to edit existing subtitles, I can use Jubler, a free and Java-based subtitle editor. I can use this tool to edit SRT, SUB, TXT and several other formats.

A wizard will help you install Jubler on your computer. Said wizard will invite you to pick what components will be installed: Jubler editor, Start Menu shortcuts, desktop icon, Java Runtime Environment. If you already have Java on your computer, you can opt out of installing this component.

You can use Jubler to edit SRT, SUB, TXT and several other formats. Load a SRT file for example and text will populate the application’s interface. The text that is part of the SRT file will be presented on the main panel on the application’s interface. Above and below this main panel there are options to edit the text: change start time, change end time, edit the text itself, play with text formatting options, and so on.

You can also use Jubler to create subtitles. To help you out with this endeavor, Jubler relies on ASpell to check your spelling and on MPlayer (aka SMPlayer) to let you view video content.

Jubler is free software released under a GNU General Public License (GPL). Donations are encouraged. So if you find value in this application, if you like Jubler, show your support and make a donation.

Jubler gives you everything you need to create and edit subtitles. This is a properly good tool for anyone who works with subtitles.

Pros

There is nothing complicated about installing Jubler. Since Jubler is based on Java, it is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. Lots of useful features are offered: edit individual subtitles, split, join, time shift, frame rate conversion, fix time inconsistencies, undo and redo, preview subtitles, spell checking, and more. Jubler is free software (consider making a donation).

Cons

None that I could think of.
